No room for Medical educationists in MCI

Teachers of the medical sciences have been
kept out of the Medical Council of India (MCI) board, even as a new MBBS curriculum is being drawn up as part of MCI’s Vision 2015. The teaching faculty is upset that MCI’s new board appointed has super specialist doctors, who have been mostly into private practice.
“The curriculum designed by MCI would be
implemented in medical colleges across the country. It is really shocking that the
board has no vice-chancellor or an educationist who can help in designing the curriculum,” said Dr Arun Jamkar, vice
chancellor, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS). Expressing displeasure on the new board, Dr Sanjay
Oak, director of major BMC hospitals said that medical education reforms are on the
anvil and it would have been appropriate to have a VC, dean or a medical teacher being
made a team member. “I would have been happy to see teachers who are actually
connected and concerned about undergraduate and post-graduate education
representing MCI,” added Oak.
The tenure of the earlier board expired on May 14. The current board remains temporary as the government had dissolved the MCI after the CBI arrested its president Ketan Desai last year for allegedly taking Rs 2 crore bribe.
